Moving Image Istanbul is the first in a series of new emerging market editions for the video art fair Moving Image, which currently has flagship locations in New York and London. This year, it will run alongside ArtInternational, from 25 to 28 September 2014.

Inaugural Istanbul edition of video art fair
On 29 May 2014, Moving Image art fair announced the launch of its Istanbul edition this fall. Founded in 2011, Moving Image is an art fair dedicated to video art and experimental film. It is an accessible and low cost platform for dealers and gallerists to explore new markets, and thus far has had annual editions in New York and London.
Moving Image Istanbul will take place from 25 to 28 September 2014 in the Kuleli Building of the Haliç Congress Centre in Istanbul. Running alongside the highly acclaimed ArtInternational, the expanding art fair aims to bring video art to a wider audience and help participating galleries explore emerging markets around the world.

Video art in emerging markets
Depending on the success of the inaugural Turkish edition, other possible future locations for Moving Image include Hong Kong, São Paolo, Berlin and Los Angeles. As co-founders Murat Orozobekov and Edward Winkleman explained in the announcement:
With this expansion to the very exciting and burgeoning art market in Istanbul, the gateway between Europe and the Middle East, Moving Image seeks to broaden the international scope of its mission to connect more of the collectors, curators, and dealers supporting contemporary artists working in moving-image-based media.
Kathleen Forde, Artistic Director of Borusan Contemporary Istanbul and a member of the Moving Image Curatorial Advisory Committee, elaborated on the choice of Istanbul:
The Istanbul art scene has had a definitive international boom in recent years which appears only to be continuing to gain momentum. Moving Image has always been forward thinking across the board from concept, to timing, to location and of course in the work it presents … so it is in line with their progressive paradigms to be coming to Istanbul at this time.

Video art on the rise
Video art is increasingly being seen as a medium that is here to stay: all four names on the 2014 Turner Prize shortlist belong to artists who work with film, video, recorded sound and photographs.
This year also saw the establishment of Art Basel Hong Kong’s first Film sector, featuring cinema and video art by emerging and established artists from the East and West. Additionally, the upcoming M+ museum in Hong Kong is reportedly building an ambitious collection of moving image artworks, suggesting that the popularity of this medium is not only on the rise, but here to stay.
