The Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) is touring its exhibition of works by the ten artists shortlisted for the Jameel Prize 3 (2013) to Kazan in the Republic of Tatarstan for the first time. The exhibition will be hosted by the Hermitage-Kazan Exhibition Centre from 21 May to 17 August 2014 and will then travel to Moscow’s New Manezh, where it will be on show until 23 November 2014.
The exhibition is curated by Tim Stanley, Senior Curator for the V&A’s Middle Eastern collection, and Salma Tuqan, the V&A’s curator for Middle Eastern contemporary art and design. It will feature over twenty works as diverse as Arabic typography and calligraphy, video installations and fashion inspired by the mosques of Istanbul.
The Jameel Prize 3 exhibition tour to Russia is part of the activities planned for the UK-Russia Year of Culture 2014, a programme to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of both countries.

Building ties
The V&A’s Islamic art collection was started in the 1850s, making the V&A the first institution in the world to collect Islamic art in a systematic fashion.
The Calvert Journal quoted Azerbaijani sculptor Faig Ahmed, one of the finalists who will exhibit in the show, as saying:
I am certain that artworks focusing on Islamic traditions will definitely act as a cultural exchange and increase cultural understanding of Islamic art in Russia. I think that through the prism of art, people can understand foreign cultures better. It’s a multinational language.
The V&A has a history of collaboration with Russia. There are a number of fine Russian objects on show in the museum, and it has also co-curated exhibitions and exchanges with Moscow’s Kremlin Museums. Additionally, the United Kingdom and Russia have loaned each other a number of significant artworks over the years.

The Jameel Prize
The Jameel Prize is a bi-annual international prize for contemporary artists and designers inspired by Islamic traditions. The ten finalists for its third edition in 2013 were selected out of 270 nominations by a panel headed by V&A Director Martin Roth. The shortlisted artists and designers, who will participate in the touring exhibition, are:
The GBP25,000 prize, announced in December 2013, was awarded to Dice Kayek – a high-fashion studio based in Paris and run by a sister duo from Turkey – for their collection of garments rooted in Istanbul’s architectural and artistic heritage. As quoted on Yatzer, the judges chose them because Dice Kayek’s work
demonstrates how vibrant and creative Islamic traditions continue to be today. […] Their translation of architectural ideas into fashion shows how Islamic traditions can still transfer from one art form to another, as they did [sic] in the past.
