A visitor from London recently spoke with Art Radar about the Hong Kong art scene:

Para Site International Conference
The Para Site International Conference 2014, entitled “Is the Living Body the Last Thing Left Alive? The new performance turn, its histories and its institutions”, takes place from Thursday 3 April to Saturday 5 April 2014 at The Hong Kong Jockey Club Hall, Asia Society Hong Kong Center. The conference is co-conceived by Cosmin Costinas and Ana Janevski, co-presented by Asia Society Hong Kong Center and sponsored by Orientations Magazine.
Discussing the renewed encounter between dance, performance and institutions of global contemporary art, the international forum looks at the development of dance and performance art, and their geographically dispersed histories. The conference asks what is possible in the paradigm of art and performance today.
The conference is divided into three sections: the first part of the conference focuses on the new performance turn and the entrance of dance performances into museums; the second day looks at the more recent proliferation of living bodies in exhibition spaces and of dance in museum programmes; the third session looks at case studies of different histories of performance art within the field of visual arts throughout the twentieth century.
Guest speakers at the conference include experts such as Andre Lepecki (Associate Professor at the Department of Performance Studies at New York University), Stuart Comer (Chief Curator of Media and Performance Art at The Museum of Modern Art, New York) and Catherine Wood (Curator of Contemporary Art and Performance at Tate Modern, London), among others.

Ink Experiments Workshop – Session 2
As one of the four contemporary Hong Kong artists participating in the exhibition “Light and Shadows – Caravaggio, the Italian Baroque Master” (12 March – 13 April 2014), Wucius Wong will be holding his second “Ink Experiments Workshop” at Asia Society Hong Kong Center on 12 April 2014.
The artist will demonstrate ink painting with the tools, concepts and techniques that relate to both traditional and contemporary ink art. The workshop is open to anyone and will give participants the opportunity to experiment with ink under the artist’s guidance, exploring the beauty of the world of ink art.
Wucius Wong (b. 1936, Guangdong) is one of the foremost ink artists from Hong Kong. His paintings fuse ancient Chinese ink tradition with the bold colours and aesthetics of western modern art. Wong was educated in the United States and in 1971 he received the John D. Rockefeller Fund Grant. In 1998, he was granted Emeritus Fellowship of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council. Wong’s first retrospective exhibition was held at the Hong Kong Museum of Art in 2006. In the following year, the artist was awarded the prestigious Bronze Bauhinia Star Medal by the Hong Kong Government.
On 3 April there will be the “Photography workshop – An Exploration without light” by another artist in the exhibition, So Hing-Keung.

Sotheby’s Spring Sales 2014
Sotheby’s Hong Kong Spring Sales 2014 will be held from 4 to 8 April 2014. Prior to the sales, highlights have been part of travelling exhibitions during March 2014, touring in Jakarta, Shanghai, Beijing and Tokyo.
From 3 to 7 April, public exhibitions of the properties on sale will be presented at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, where the auctions are held.
The spring art auctions include:
Highlights of the sales include works by Chen Yifei, Wu Guanzhong, Zhang Xiaogang, Yue Minjun, Yoshimoto Nara, Affandi, Ronald Ventura, Zao Wou-ki and Liu Dan.
In April, the Sotheby’s Institute of Art will also hold an Executive Education short day course, “Business Management in the Art World – Hong Kong”, designed for art professionals. The programme will take place from 14 to 18 April, from 8am to 5pm GMT+8 and will include lectures, discussions, visits, workshops, case studies and presentations about the business of art. Lecturers will include influential art professionals such Art Basel’s Magnus Renfrew, Rossi & Rossi’s Director Fabio Rossi and Asia Art Archive’s Head of Research and Programmes Hammad Nasar, among others.
