“One of the Friends’ goals is to support art education and we are always looking for new approaches and avenues to help the new generation broaden their horizon through art,” says Dominica Yang, Chair of The Friends of the Art Museum, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. “The Art Radar Diploma in Art Journalism & Writing seems like the perfect ‘gift’ for our CU students alongside other scholarships we offer; it gives the students a different perspective of ‘how art works’ and how writing could play a key role in the art world. In this very competitive society, our young talents need to arm themselves with many skills, self-motivation and confidence. We are very excited to be able to offer this to our students and we cannot wait to hear from Angel On Ki Choi, our first award recipient, about how she finds the course. We are grateful to Art Radar for initiating this sponsorship and we hope this will be the beginning of a wonderful ‘FRIEND’ship. We are delighted to be able to introduce new opportunities to our students, as we continue to help our Young Friends to thrive.”
“We are thrilled to be working with The Friends to support Hong Kong art workers,” says Kate Cary Evans, Founder of Art Radar Institute. “Today, artists and curators have a problem. Recent technological developments in the communication field mean that everyone can be a writer and publisher. The publishing environment is a noisy, competitive world with more content being produced than ever before. How can art workers get their projects in front of the public? In the past, galleries acted as go between between the art world, the press and the public. But the internet is shaking up those old relationships. We developed this course to help participants gain the extra skills they need to promote their projects successfully themselves. We teach students how to get inside the heads of editors who matter, write about their work in an accessible, professional way that pleases the public and gets found on Google.”
The first student sponsored by The Friends, Angel On Ki Choi, started the thirteen-week-long Certificate in Art Journalism & Writing 101, the first of four certificates in the Diploma programme, on Monday 25 November 2013. Nominated for the scholarship by Professor Melissa Lee, Department of English, CUHK, Angel is studying English, Fine Arts and Japanese Language and Culture (at Bachelor’s level) at the university and has participated in a number of internships and temporary positions in the arts field in Hong Kong and abroad including Intern for EC Gallery (current); Writing Volunteer for The Leeds City Museum; Event Volunteer for the 18th Biennale of Sydney; and Exhibition Assistant for Christie’s Hong Kong.
Art Radar Institute’s Certificate in Art Journalism & Writing 101 is the first of four certificates that make up the Art Radar Diploma in Art Journalism & Writing. Students participating in this first certificate learn foundation art journalism skills and produce one to two articles under the guidance of an experienced art editor. The articles are published on Art Radar, which, with 20,000 unique visitors a month and a prestigious readership, is one of Asia’s leading online contemporary art publications. The Diploma in Art Journalism & Writing is the premier course offered by Art Radar Institute. It is written by Kate Cary Evans (Founder and Executive Editor, Art Radar and Art Radar Institute) and edited by Cassandra Naji (Editor, Art Radar).
