Would you like to learn more about how to appreciate contemporary Asian art? The traditional advice given to art enthusiasts who want to learn how to appreciate art is to ‘train your eye’ by ‘looking’ at plenty of art. However for the novice it can be difficult to know exactly how to do this. What should we look at? What should we look for?

You will:

  • learn 5 helpful actions to take when you encounter an artwork for the first time
  • understand the unstudied parallels and differences between Asian and Western contemporary art
  • discover how a scholar, a connoisseur and a curator appreciate art in strikingly different ways
  • learn where many of our most cherished beliefs about “good art” came from and why they are obsolete
  • find out 3 compelling questions to ask dealers or artists at a show
  • learn what formal analysis of art really means…and it is not what you think
  • understand why appreciating contemporary art has been called “opening 1000 doors”
  • see how ‘looking’ can become an active creative process which can bring unexpected rewards.

In this talk we will look at art from Singapore, Japan, India, Hong Kong and Korea and use the artworks to tell us the story of the evolution of art appreciation into the practices current today. At the end of the talk you will have developed new ways of looking at art so that you can go out and discuss Asian contemporary art with collectors dealers and artists with greater confidence. You will also be given some practical tips and suggestions about where to go and what to do as you take the next steps on your art appreciation journey in Hong Kong.
